For me the stand out tracks from the new album are “Jared”, “Jim and Me” and “Still Got You”. The album is a snapshot of the human condition, happiness, love and grief all rolled into one distinctive album. The album keeps the tradition of John Prine and Ian Tyson alive for a new audience. Stefanie Joyce joins CloudwatcherUno from Nashville where she has carved out a career as a songwriter on Music Row. Stefanie’s 2021 single “Treasure” charted on Billboard@billboardcharts (co-written and performed by @maryheatherhickman ) debuted on country radio and was featured on the Bobby Bones show @bobbybonesshow

Now it’s Stefanie’s turn to shine in the spotlight as a singer in her own right. Just listen to her latest single “Presidio” to see why Stefanie should be at the top of your listening playlist. Stefanie describes her music as the love child of red dirt country music meets music row. Stefanie describes how working on Music Row for so many years has resulted in her lyrics being born as linear songs but then using that to produce something more poetic and rough for listening audiences.

Born in New York, raised in Canada and now living in Nashville, Tennessee, the young Stefanie was in love with storytelling, especially southern literature and used that passion to write songs. In the podcast we talk about how in the country music coming out of Nashville songs are written not by the band performing them but by other artists or in collaboration with other artists. It’s a tradition that is uniquely cultivated within this genre.
Singer Songwriter is a music nerd of the highest order.
Stefanie moved to Nashville initially to join the song writing industry that has grown in Nashville and provides the hits for the biggest names in country music today. Stefanie built up her network and her community and now feels it’s time to release her own songs. A new EP will be released in the summer featuring “Idle Hands” and “Love Thy Neighbor“.
Stefanie is 100 per cent Country through and through.
We talk about her interest in murder ballads and how she came to co-write “Ouachita River” with Mary Heather Hickman and how this subverts the usual tradition by having a male protagonist perish within the song. Murder Ballads originated within the United Kingdom and were brought over by Scottish/Irish immigrants who then used real places within their ballads. This song has been nominated for the Arkansas Country Music Awards 2022 for Best Song, Vocal Duo/ Group and Mary for best Female Vocalist. Nominees (arkansasmusic.org)

Stefanie explains that she wants to be able to play for bigger venues and audiences and when that opportunity comes she’s going to grab it with both hands. Stefanie has played both The Listening Room and Bluebird Cafe and will be doing more Nashville shows and a tour in The Fall of 2022.

Geneviève Racette talks with CloudwatcherUno about her latest album “Satellite” a collection of 9 songs exploring themes of how humans fall in and out of love and finding the courage to do so after heartbreak.

Québec is the only province in Canada that French is the official language and so being bi-lingual is something that Geneviève has mastered. So much so that she released a purely French album in 2016 “Les Aurores Borèales” The government gives a lot of grants and money to keep the French language alive and protect it from those who speak English.

Geneviève only used to write and sing In French but as a child spoke both languages as her mother wanted her to be able to understand the English language. Geneviève learnt by watching Sesame Street and other kids TV shows and eventually decided to explore this English sensibility that had grown within her to explore different worlds of music.

Song writing for Geneviève begins with words in French and English, and then she will collect them all together to make a finished song. “Satellite” was completely mixed, recorded and produced during the global lockdown. Only in February 2022 did music venues open up again in Québec, it’s been a very long lockdown within Canada.
A whole year was spent exploring new songs, demos and ideas to record these final ideas and then mixed them. Geneviève co produced every note with her Producer sometimes in a studio but mainly from home. Finally after two long years the album was released in March 2022.

Geneviève became friends with Dallas Green from “City and Colour” over Instagram a Canadian musical legend and then sent the demos to Dallas Green and he asked if he could sing on the song “Someone“. Geneviève was over the moon with excitement that her musical hero was going to sing on her song and the album. Geneviève feels proud, joyful and overwhelmed with emotion that her album is now out for the world to hear.
