Geneviève Racette talks with CloudwatcherUno about her latest album “Satellite” a collection of 9 songs exploring themes of how humans fall in and out of love and finding the courage to do so after heartbreak.

Québec is the only province in Canada that French is the official language and so being bi-lingual is something that Geneviève has mastered. So much so that she released a purely French album in 2016 “Les Aurores Borèales” The government gives a lot of grants and money to keep the French language alive and protect it from those who speak English.

Geneviève only used to write and sing In French but as a child spoke both languages as her mother wanted her to be able to understand the English language. Geneviève learnt by watching Sesame Street and other kids TV shows and eventually decided to explore this English sensibility that had grown within her to explore different worlds of music.

Song writing for Geneviève begins with words in French and English, and then she will collect them all together to make a finished song. “Satellite” was completely mixed, recorded and produced during the global lockdown. Only in February 2022 did music venues open up again in Québec, it’s been a very long lockdown within Canada.

A whole year was spent exploring new songs, demos and ideas to record these final ideas and then mixed them. Geneviève co produced every note with her Producer sometimes in a studio but mainly from home. Finally after two long years the album was released in March 2022.

Geneviève became friends with Dallas Green from “City and Colour” over Instagram a Canadian musical legend and then sent the demos to Dallas Green and he asked if he could sing on the song “Someone“. Geneviève was over the moon with excitement that her musical hero was going to sing on her song and the album. Geneviève feels proud, joyful and overwhelmed with emotion that her album is now out for the world to hear.

In 2016 Bobby Dove released ‘Thunderchild‘ a collection of country songs that explore being released from oppression or at least self oppression with country music stylings. One of the most phenomenal tracks is ‘Floor Licker‘ which deserves to be a in a car chase in a movie. Truly if they ever do Baby Driver 2 then this is the soundtrack for this movie. ‘Cowgirl Bob‘ is about a lawyer from Texas that Bobby met online and how fantasy fell apart when it met reality.

Get ready to start your engines with ‘Floor Licker‘ from the album ‘Thunderchild‘ by Bobby Dove

In February 2021 Bobby released ‘Hopeless Romantic‘ light years away from Thunderchild as Bobby’s experiences of travelling and touring across the country and playing in front of live audiences enriched her life experiences and her music focuses on unrequited love, being on the road, haunted hotels and hard-rocking pallbearers. The album was co-produced with Bazil Donovan (Blue Rodeo) and Tim Vesely (Rheostatics) at The Woodshed studio in Toronto. On Hopeless Romantic, Bobby collaborates with some of the finest in Canadian Country music including members of Blue Rodeo Jim Cuddy, Bazil Donovan and Jimmy Bowskill (The Sheepdogs, Blue Rodeo), and Burke Carroll (Kathleen Edwards).

The album itself was recorded with Bobby’s long-term band members from Toronto and was recorded pre-covid timesBut wasn’t ready to be released in the height of the pandemic getaway tracks still to be mastered. Bobby released the album herself without the help of a label as a digital release but other formats will come out in due course. Along with merchandise that supports this music.

Bobby is currently hunkering down in western Manitoba, supporting the launch of  Hopeless Romantic as well as developing The Bobby Dove Show, a virtual variety show, featuring Bobby’s new songs, and interviews with renowned roots/Country singer-songwriters from across Canada. Sponsored by the Canada Council for the Arts, the Bobby Dove Show will be shared on Bobby’s social-media as well as on bobbydove.com.
