Charley Crockett at HOXTON HALL

Charley Crockett at Hoxton Hall, London 6th May 2024

Charley Crockett graced London with his music last night in London’s Hoxton Hall. One of three dates billed as an intimate evening with the man himself. It’s a strange little venue which has roots in being a Music Hall, with two upper balconies so that the audience can get an ariel view of the act they have come to see.

Having arrived early to ensure that I got a place at the barrier (there is no barrier just a very high stage) I was greeted by his grumpy management (social skills were not their forte). Security staff were overwhelmed by the amount of fans that had arrived ‘I’ve been working here three years and I’ve never seen a line this big’. Once inside the machines being used to scan tickets didn’t work (not their fault apparently they hadn’t been given the right code).

Charley Crockett transforming London into Southern Texas

The merch on sale was cool with prices to match (especially if you wanted to buy the autographed vinyl or tour poster). Then entering the main hall you got the sense of history of the place with it’s wooden panelling and balustrades.

Then Charley came on stage and the audience erupted with whoops and whistles. It was so satisfying seeing Charley where he belongs on stage. I’m not sure if it was nerves or jetlag or a combination of both but the first few songs felt rushed and at times Charley started songs and abandoned them when he felt he hadn’t got them right or couldn’t remember the words. At one point he said to the crowd that he’d been ‘relying on the Blue Drifter’s too much’ and apologised for his guitar being out of tune ‘Usually it wouldn’t matter as you cant here it with the whole band’.

The show came to a complete stop when a fan collapsed due to heat Charley had to come to the microphone and said ‘Even in the USA we would get someone to help the lady out’, security did eventually come but it was the fans around her who helped her with water. Afterwards Charley did hope she was well. The break seemed to have given Charley a second breath and he came back more energised.

Just a man singing honest songs about the human condition.

Charley opened with ‘Are We Lonesome Yet’ and went through his extensive back catalogue with songs such as ‘The Valley’, Of The Cottonwood Trees’, and other classics like ‘Black Jack Country Chain’, ‘Juanita’, ‘Odessa’, ‘July Jackson’, ‘Night Rider’ and ‘5 More Miles’.

The one and only Charley Crockett in London’s Hoxton Hall.

Overall Charley gave a mesmerising performance which was worth the price of admission. There were flashes of excellence, an energy that connected the artist to this London audience and flowed back onto the stage.

CloudwatcherUno Podcast S12 Ep 4 ~ Ags Connolly

Ags Connolly is the honkiest tonkin’ homegrown outlaw we’ve had on the CloudwatcherUno podcast. Ags Connolly is a traditional country singer-songwriter from Oxfordshire but in his soul beats the heart of a native Texan artist. His debut album ‘How About Now’ was released in February 2014 and received fantastic reviews, Maverick magazine hailed it as a ‘masterpiece’.

Ags talks about how vitally important it is for investment in the arts to support UK artists and how that differs for musicians in mainland Europe. We’ve lost so many venues over the last couple of years which impacts music in the UK including the iconic ‘Borderline‘ in London where so many legends of country played but sadly no longer exists.

Ags explains the importance of having a producer such as ‘Dean Owens‘ who is as passionate and whose skill and experience transforms an ordinary album into a modern masterpiece. Dean worked with Ags on his first two albums and his legacy can be heard on Ag’s self produced third and fourth album.

On ‘Siempre‘, Spanish for ‘always’, his latest album he fully embraces the border country Tex-Mex sound, Ags wanted a completely authentic sound and that meant learning to play bajo quinto, the instrument is similar to a guitar but infinitely harder to learn how to play. Ags even sings in Spanish, no mean feat for this British artist.

If you resonate with the sound of Texas-style music, flawlessly sung and exquisitely played, then Ags is the artist for you. The seamless fusion of captivating melodies and heartfelt lyrics creates a mesmerizing musical journey that’s perfect for a summer evening spent on your porch, in your garden, or anywhere you can unwind.

‘Siempre’ is not just an album; it’s a mesmerizing journey through time and space, a sonic exploration that captures the essence of longing and wanderlust. From the first note to the closing melody, this masterpiece weaves a captivating tapestry of emotions that resonate deep within the soul, drawing on the nostalgia of distant places and heartfelt stories. Each track in this musical opus is an indispensable addition to your collection, enriching your playlist with its enchanting melodies and evocative harmonies.

CloudwatcherUno Podcast S5 Ep 8 ~ Dallas Burrow

Dallas Burrow’s voice will take you away to a country that only exists in his heart and his music. It’s called Texas, the Lone Star State that is so mythical in the world of music it seems to fill the listener with dreams of how they too could live the life of an adventurer without a care in this world.

Born and raised in Texas, his first experiences of the country music world were from his father (a blood brother of Townes Van Zandt and friend of Guy Clark). Dallas Burrow continued the song writing tradition with his first album like 2019’s ‘Southern Wind‘, and now his sophomore self titled album ‘Dallas Burrow

Country Girl‘ by Dallas Burrow

To record the album, Dallas went old school in the production of the album by recording to two-inch analogue tape by producer Bruce Robison. He met Bruce while going on tour with the living legend that is Charley Crockett. The end result is the nearest you’ll get to hearing Dallas and his band play live. Dallas recorded the album with bassist Sterling Finlay (Todd Snider), guitarist Larry Chaney (Steve Earle), pianist Kullen Fox (Charley Crockett, Paul Cauthen), violinist Bryan Duckworth (Robert Earle Keen), steel guitarist and dobro player Dan Johnson (Hank III), slide guitarist Chad Pope (Dale Watson), pedal steel guitarist Cody Angel (Jason Boland), drummer Josh Blue (Bruce Robison’s band), and guitarist Chris Kues (Burrow’s own touring lineup).

Dallas Burrow, Texan through and through.

I’ve realized that being a family man is perhaps life’s greatest adventure so far. I’m still writing about the adventures I’ve had… I’m just embracing a new kind of adventure.

American Dream‘ by Dallas Burrow

Stand out tracks are ‘American Dream‘ and ‘Country Girl‘ with the epic ‘Outlaw Highway‘. It’s an album that brings fire to the soul, showcases how much travelling around the world as influenced this Texan adventurer and presents a man reborn and this is the soundtrack to his new life.

CloudwatcherUno Podcast S3 Ep9 ~ South Texas Tweek

South Texas Tweek

South Texas Tweek is the hero for these uncertain times. His music takes you away and wraps you up in an unique honky tonk blanket of tejano goodness. With a voice of a bygone era he has simultaneously given us something new and delivered us to the time when artists like Webb Pierce roamed the country and western musical landscape. Just like his musical heroes South Texas Tweek has a genuine love for this genre of music. And it shows from his hours and hours of dedication to his craft of singing and song writing.

Growing up in the Deep South Bible Belt certainly shaped his early years but growing older has meant that his view of the world has both matured and flourished musically. With his first official single ‘Count On Me’ released on his birthday December 2020 Tweek blew the status quo of what listeners were used to out of the water. An acoustic version was out in August 2020 but this fully formed version with the pedal steel and breaks is a different beast altogether.

‘Count On Me’ The sensational debut single by South Texas Tweek.

Its not the first time for Tweek and Charley Crockett to co write a song together. On Charley’s album ‘Welcome to Hard Times’ the track ‘Lily My Dear’ was written with Tweek, Vincent Neil Emerson and Colin Colby on Charley’s tour bus outside a gig at Greek Bros, in El Campo, Texas. Vincent and Charley already had the hook with Charley playing on his banjo. After 30 minutes the song was complete! Tweek and Charley’s friendship has been growing for many years. At first Tweek wanted to be just a songwriter but the urge to stand in front of an audience took over. In September 2020 Tweek took the plunge into the country and western music world.

Hard work and passion for country and western music is what drives South Texas Tweek.

Tweek’s life and music is an inspiration and this is reflected on his entry into the Texas Music Charts. Patsy Cline, Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark have all been part of Tweek’s musical education but George Jones is first among equals in his admiration and love for his musical legacy to upcoming artists. In this podcast we get to hear Tweek sing live and acoustically two songs ‘Living Low’ a folk inspired singer songwriter Texas inspired song and ‘Count On Me’ his knockout calling card in the world of music.

‘Count On Me’ by South Texas Tweek

The pandemic hasn’t slowed Tweek’s love of hunting and fishing and it’s his way of escaping the isolation of the pandemic. It’s a reminder of a life filled with friends and family that we all strive for. Tweek is looking forward to going out on the road and play some shows. Tweek’s put everything into his music and has an audience that is hungry to see such a new stellar artist live. 2 more songs are coming out from the session he recorded last October 2020. He hopes to tour in the later half of the year with a possible full album by the end of the year. His next release will be ’50 Dollars A Week’ which he co wrote with Charley Crockett coming out on Valentines Day 2021.
